Top Tips for a Cool 4th of July Party

On July 4th, we celebrate Independence Day. On July 4, 1776, we commemorated the Declaration of Independence, officially freeing America from the rule of the monarchy of Colonial England. In addition to recognizing this most important of historical events, the 4th of July has now become a day of new traditions, celebrations, and enjoyment.

We enjoy barbecues, picnics, fireworks, concerts, parades, parties and other social events. Our streets are decked out in the red, white and blue flags that are proudly displayed. People tend to put personal politics aside and embrace each other as Americans, members of a free nation, and we feel a sense of pride and kinship that unites us.

Of course, barring some weather-related aberration, the 4th of July is almost guaranteed to be sweltering, especially if you live in an area with a warm climate. It’s easy to forget to stay hydrated and wind up in trouble, as well as accidentally ignoring other potential hazards that can occur on the 4th if you are not paying attention. Here are a few air conditioning tips to keep you safe, healthy and free to enjoy the fun on the 4th of July.

Hydration Is Essential for Keeping Cool

stayhydratedStaying hydrated is of the utmost importance on the 4th of July (and every other day, naturally). On the 4th, you are likely to spend a lot of time outside, whether it’s attending a barbecue, a parade, mowing the lawn, going to the beach, or simply going about your daily activities.

Many adults also are likely to drink a few alcoholic beverages at social events – for many, it’s part of kicking back and relaxing. However, exposure to the sun, prolonged time in the heat, drinking alcohol and not drinking enough water can all lead to dehydration.

These seemingly arbitrary behaviors can land you in the hospital – certainly not the way you want to spend any day, let alone a holiday meant to be shared with family and friends. Be mindful of your fluid consumption, and be vigilant of the signs of dehydration, not just in yourself, but in others. Drinking lots of water can help you to stay cool and comfortable and can prevent you from turning the AC way up to beat the heat.

Check the Air Filter

You certainly do not want harmful smoke circulating throughout your home. It’s not only detrimental to your health but can also cause a filmy residue to build up on your painted walls, requiring cleaning.

Additionally, the 4th of July falls right in the middle of the year. It is the perfect time to have an HVAC tech clean and check your air filter as part of your regular home maintenance.

Keep Up With Preventative Maintenance

preventativemaintenanceIf it’s simply too hot outside, or it’s pouring rain or thundering, and you happen to be hosting a 4th of July party, your guests will undoubtedly move inside. Even if the weather is ideal, your guests will still be moving inside and outside for food, beverages, to use the restroom, so on and so forth.

Imagine having a house full of guests and suddenly your AC fails. That’s a quick way to ruin a good time. Instead of waiting for disaster to strike and ruin your otherwise fabulous party, have an HVAC tech inspect your air conditioner and conduct any necessary repairs.

It’s one less thing to worry about, and your 4th of July party will be a hit, rain or shine.
